MINI Gyaru Guides: Clothing!

Hi hi~!

This won't be a very long blog, but I wanted to share this really amazing Twitter thread on Gyaru clothes/coords!

One of the main things I see baby gals, and basically all gals, say is: "I can't find Gyaru clothing ANYWHERE!" and I totally understand the feeling!

Sadly, a lot of the iconic Gyaru brands are out of business. Nowadays, you have to buy brands like Alba Rosa second-hand, and that can get very expensive. In general, buying brand is just... Expensive. Whether the clothes are second-hand or from modern gal brands, you can expect to spend a good chunk of change.

For smaller brands like HELLO ANGEL GIRL, the prices can be understandable when the cost of labor and materials is broken down, but most people probably don't have enough disposable income to justify making a purchase.

(Absolutely no shade to HAG intended, by the way. They clearly do just fine in terms of sales, and it's a dream of mine to own one of their GAL necklaces and chain belts, but I just want to be realistic.)

SHUSHU CHERRY is another brand whose prices are understandable, but not necessarily obtainable for the average consumer.

When it comes to the older OG brands, we also need to keep in mind that the pieces might not be of the best quality. I touched on this in my Gyaru unpopular opinions blog from forever ago, but I think people forget that Gyaru is ultra-consumerism personified. Gyaru clothing very quickly became fast fashion because it was so mainstream, so a lot of these holy grail, almost mythological pieces from JP brands are on par with Shein quality. Even today, with OG brands reopening their stores, the quality can leave a bit to be desired. I've even heard rumors (unconfirmed rumors, so this is all alleged) of D.I.A. dropshipping some of their pieces. Although you can find reasonably priced second-hand pieces, you're more likely to find them being snatched up by scalpers and resold for ass-backwards amounts. It just very quickly becomes harder to justify purchasing items like this, since it's more akin to someone selling price-gouged Shein clothes than supporting a business or sustainably buying second-hand.

On top of that, the brands just aren't very size-inclusive either. Japanese sizing can be really intense, and even someone who wears a US size small can have trouble fitting into Japanese brands. So any gals above a US size medium, maybe a large if you push it, are just out of luck.

As a plus-size gal, and a gal with zero disposable income save for the very occasional $20, getting clothes that screamed "gal" seemed really hopeless for a while.

But what if I told you, true Gyaru clothing is literally just... Clothing! You can wear anything and be a gal!

Whenever I tell baby gals this, they look at me like I have 3 heads, but it's true!

Recently, as I was doom scrolling on Twitter, I came across this really amazing thread by the user vickyslith_ about how simple it can be to dress gal! I'll link it here for you all to check it out, but I really love visual breakdowns like this. Being able to see how easy it is to put together a gal coord with some closet basics makes it all feel so much less intimidating. Seriously, if you have a pair of bootcut or flared jeans, you can do just about anything!

Here's one outfit from the thread that really showcases that:

When you break it all down, it's really just jeans, a tank top, and a jacket with some accessories! And it's so gal!

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: You really only need gal make to be considered a gal! You could wear literally anything, but so long as you have make-up on, you are a gal.

Take a look at this gal:

All she has on is a t-shirt and sweatpants, and she still reads as gal! Even my beloved Tomonya mastered the art of being a gal even in a plain sweatsuit. All this to say, it really is that simple!

I'll finish this blog off with the wise words from Harutamu that I always share:

So, wear whatever you want! Don't feel bad if you don't own any brand for whatever reason, or if you don't always wear extremely intricate coords. So long as you wear gal make, Gyaru clothing is simply what you have on!

~

I hope you all enjoyed this short little Gyaru Guides blog! I've been wanting to talk about this subject for a while now, and it felt good to have a moment of inspiration where I could just yap about it, haha. I'm still working on the Chinese/Korean Gyaru blog, but it should be out within the next couple of days! Thank you all for your continued patience with me~ Please look forward to my next blog!

Remember, Antama loves you~!

Kiss kiss~ ☆⌒ヽ(*'、^*)chu
