fish tank nerd blog~
*insert impressive title here*
やっほー~! (aka first actual blog post ahoy!)
i feel like i can finally breathe a sigh of relief! i'm finally done importing all of my blogs from spacehey!!![]()
i feel a bit strange writing a regular post like this... but it's a good kind of strange i think? i honestly went into this thinking i'd have to write like i'm talking to strangers, but i think i'll just write like i would on spacehey! so, apologies in advance if i mention things that i haven't gotten into here yet, lol...
Gyarusa Deep Dive
I know I haven't posted one in quite a while, so I want to thank everyone for being patient with me... From college/uni taking up all of my time, to personal matters making me feel less than motivated to write, I'm so glad to finally be writing this blog for all of you~
As you can tell from the title, this is going to be another one of my research-heavy deep dives, so get ready for a long read!
Gyaru Guides: Make & Hairstyling!
Finding the right products for gal make can be such a battle at times. For such a long time, I felt completely lost when trying to find products that really gave me the look I was going for. Believe me, there were a few months that my "gal make" was actually horrific and not Gyaru at all.
At some point, I will post a proper makeup tutorial, but for now, I can (hopefully) give you all some recommendations and tips with this blog! The awkward phase is a bit unavoidable when learning to do gal make, but I hope my embarrassment is your knowledge gained!
Chinese & Korean Gyaru: The Differences, the Similarities, & More!
As you can likely glean from the title, this blog will be focusing on two specific groups of gaijin gals: Chinese and Korean gals!
I think a lot of the time, people picture Gyaru as being popular with two main groups of people: Japanese gals and Western gaijin gals. I think that's fair, seeing as a lot of the current Gyaru content overwhelmingly showcases the two groups. However, I think it's time that we give other gaijin gals some spotlight!
MINI Gyaru Guides: Clothing!
This won't be a very long blog, but I wanted to share this really amazing Twitter thread on Gyaru clothes/coords!
One of the main things I see baby gals, and basically all gals, say is: "I can't find Gyaru clothing ANYWHERE!" and I totally understand the feeling!
"Dead" and Obscure Gyaru Substyles
So, as you can probably tell from the title, the topic of today's blog is going to be the "dead" substyles of Gyaru!
My use of quotes when I refer to "dead" substyles is very intentional, and I'll tell you why: I don't think most of these styles are truly dead! There are two substyles that I do think probably deserve to be dead or remain in obscurity, but we'll get into that later on, since there is some nuance to it.
Gyaru Guides: Tips on Being Gyaru in a Strict Environment
"Any tips on being a gyaru as a teen? I have strict parents and an even more strict school(uniform, no makeup, no nails, no weird hairstyles etc) so I was wondering how I can have the gal vibe everywhere"
I posted this as a bulletin, but of course, not all of my readers can/have seen it, so I decided to post the tips I shared on my blog! Since this is one of the questions I get asked all the time, I wanted to take a moment to go really in depth with the information. Everyone deserves to be gal, no matter what environment they might be living in, and I hope some of this information can be helpful!
Crash Course: Bodikon Gyaru & Juliana's Tokyo
So, if you've been around since the beginning, then you might remember that in my first-ever blog post, we discussed the origins of Gyaru! It's honestly my Roman Empire, along with Juliana's Tokyo. If you don't remember, then please don't go read that blog... Rereading it now, it's honestly garbage!
Gyaru Characters in Anime & Manga
~
Woop woop! New Gyaru blog ahoy~!
If you're anything like me, then you were introduced to Gyaru by anime/manga in the first place, so gal characters hold a very special place in my heart. Gyaru characters in anime and manga are so interesting, mostly because people see gals as the opposite of people who read/watch anime and manga, so I really like to see how otaku view gals! Some are obviously... Drawn with one hand, to put it delicately... But others are so interesting and thoughtful!
Crash Course: Ogyaru!
If you read my Gyaru terms & vocab blog that I posted a few months ago, then you may remember a term called Ogyaru, or Ogal. If not, no worries! I'll define the term again:
Ogyaru/ogal (汚ギャル): Literally means "dirty girl"; a gal who is unhygienic
It's clearly not the nicest term, but I still think its an important term for gals to learn. However, nowadays, it's practically a dead term. I know a simple Google search is often not enough when searching for Gyaru information in the best of circumstances, but I think the sheer lack of information on Ogyaru really goes to show how archaic this really is. So, despite this setback, I'll do my best to explain a bit more about Ogyaru!
What Makes a Gyaru? My Opinion
So, I mentioned in the last blog that I wanted to do more opinionated blogs! Now dont get me wrong, I love doing educational blogs, but it can be really difficult at times to do a lot of research... Not to say that I don't like doing research, but now that college has started up again, I wanna give myself a break from heavy research in my Gyaru blogs... I will still be doing research blogs, so don't worry! They'll just be more spaced out from now on~
Anyway! Let's get into the meat and potatoes of today's Gyaru blog... What (in my opinion) makes a Gyaru?
The Problem With Gyaru: Why Do So Many Gals Feel Comfortable Appropriating Black Culture?
Also, a very special thanks to Micha, who helped me in sharing their opinions for this blog. I always want to amplify the correct voices whenever I can, and I'm very grateful that you took the time to talk to me!
Alrighty, let's begin!
DEEP DIVE: Where Are They Now? Popular Gyaru Edition
I've let my blog go completely neglected for such a long time. Please forgive me!! Life has been a bit of a whirlwind these days (college, applying for jobs, settling into a new environment, the usual...), but I'm hoping to get back in the swing of things now that I have a better handle on everything! It was just so easy to put my blog out of my mind since it wasn't a necessity technically, but I'm planning to make it one for me! So do not despair, I plan to never neglect my blog, or you, my readers, ever again!! But I have to admit, the research for this one nearly killed me...
What's a Gal to Do? Gyaru Hobbies
Gyaru is more than just makeup and fashion. As with any counterculture movement, Gyaru is defined by key hobbies. Gals en masse flock to wherever community thrives, and the atmosphere is wildest, so let's discuss a bit!
Wee note before we begin: Not all Gyaru did these things, and you certainly don't have to do these things to be considered Gyaru. This is just a general overview of where and what a gal could likely be seen doing. I feel it's important to talk about our community spaces, so that any beginner gals know where they can go, either online or in real life, to find like-minded people.
Alright, let's begin~!
Gyaru Guides: Thrifting, DIY, Accessorizing, & More!
I'm buzzing with excitement for todays blog!! Today, we're going to talk about a few of my Antama Approved (TM) tips and tricks for thrifting, DIY, accessorizing, and more! I'm going to touch on everything, from clothing to tips on galifying your bedroom, so I hope theres a bit of everything for everyone!
Quick disclaimer before we begin: Tips and strategies that work for me might not work for you, or even apply to you at all, so I don't think this is a very one-size-fits-all blog... Thrifting, depending on where you're located, can be more expensive than just buying things brand new, but for me, thrifting is relatively inexpensive, so I'm going to be focusing a lot on that. Feel free to skip over or disregard things that don't work for you!
Gyaru Magazine Deep Dive
Haha, anyway! Welcome to another Antama Gyaru Blog! I'm so sorry for the delay. I debated posting this in 2 parts just to get it out at a decent time, but I thought that might be a little annoying reader-wise... Unfortunately, I'm genuinely insane, so I wanted to make this as comprehensive as possible and include as much as I possibly could!
How Young Is Too Young? Discussing Agejo, Chibi Gyaru, & More
So, during the last round of voting, topic option 3 blew the others out of the water! Option 3 must be the lucky number; this is the second time it's gotten such overwhelming votes! Hehe, anyway...
Usually, I try to have an evidence-based approach for my blogs. I am an academic at heart, after all! But for this one, I think this is going to be more of an opinion piece. When it comes to who can and can't wear certain styles, theres bound to be people who disagree with me, and that's totally fine! Where's the fun in everyone having the same opinion? But when it comes to the styles I want to touch on in particular, I think we find ourselves in a grey area.
Crash Course: Gyaruo 101
Recently, I've been getting a lot of interest in the male/masculine counterpart to Gyaru: Gyaruo!
Unlike Gyaru, the information on Gyaruo can be hard to come by, especially on the English-speaking side of the internet. But never fear! I've worked my magic (i.e., did a stupid amount of research) and have compiled a quick crash course for all of you interested in Gyaruo!
The Importance of Being Realistic: The Dark Side of Gyaru
I'm so sorry for the delay!! I know I planned to post this yesterday, but I got sidetracked... Anyway! A couple days ago, I posted a bulletin asking for everyone to vote on what the next blog topic should be, and the dark side of Gyaru blew the rest of the options out of the water!! I had a feeling that would be the case, hehe...
Thank you to everyone who participated! If everyone likes, I can start doing a weekly vote for which topic I write about? Please let me know!
Unpopular Opinions: Gyaru Edition
So far, the Gyaru blogs I've been posting have been educational, and that doesn't leave a lot of room for my own personal opinions... And as someone with a ton of opinions, I can only hold off on sharing them for so long! So, that's what this blog is going to be about!
Since this is an unpopular opinions blog, this has the potential to ruffle some feathers... But I dont mind! Gyaru is about being yourself, so who cares if I don't have the same opinions as everyone else? So long as the opinion is antithetical to Gyaru as a whole, I think it's fair game!
Gyaru Terms & Vocab!
Welcome back~! And sorry for the wait... Life has been busy since I'm getting ready to move, but I finally have some free time!
So it's time for another Gyaru blog!
If you remember the ending of my substyles blog, then you may remember that I mentioned I used quite a bit of Gyaru-specific words and wanted to make a blog about what it all means! So that's exactly what I'm doing!
The Different Substyles of Gyaru!
If you thought my history of Gyaru blog was long, then this one is going to be actually insane. There are so many ways to be a Gyaru, and it can be difficult to find one that you feel really represents you! You're in luck, though, because this blog is going to give in-depth descriptions of each substyle!
My Favorite Gyaru Resources! A Masterblog
Hi hi~! It's time for another Gyaru blog~!
If you've been interested in J-fashion at all, then you know it's always caught between being easy to find resources and mind-numbingly difficult.
Sure, things like Pinterest, TikTok, and Tumblr have an insane amount of content on them, but how many times have you seen the same photo? Or the same magazine scan? I'm sure you can't even remember by now! When getting into J-fashion, it's essential to keep your content stream fresh for your own sanity. Gyaru is no different!
Gyaru 101: How Did We Get Here?
**03/23/2026 EDIT: oh my first gyaru blog... how nostalgic (;_;) if you are reading this for the first time, please know that this is not my best work or by any means a definitive, comprehensive blog! do your own research to supplement the information here!**
Take a seat, students! Shido-chan is about to yap!
I'm sure everyone on the alternative side of the internet has seen the rise of Gyaru in recent times. We're really seeing a proper Gyaru renaissance, but I'm sure plenty of y'all are confused about the ins and outs, what it means to be a gal, and stuff like that. As Spacehey's resident education major, I've decided it's basically my sworn duty to spread the gospel of Gyaru, and that's what I intend to do!
So, what is Gyaru? And how did we get here?
